Playing the game of golf can improve your quality of life as there are many physical, emotional and social benefits.  In 2011, The First Tee Nine Healthy Habits were created through a collaboration among The First Tee, ANNIKA Foundation and Florida Hospital for Children to promote healthy, active lifestyles for youth.  In February, The First Tee of Central Florida Participant Bobby Sena was interviewed on Golf Channel’s Morning Drive talking about the Nine Healthy Habits and their impact on his life.  Here Bobby highlights his experience.

I was thrilled when I was first invited to appear on the Golf Channel’s Morning Drive segment to speak about the importance of the nine healthy habits!  I began to run through my mind which habits were the most important to me in my life.  Of course, each one was important and had played a significant role in my life, but the ones that stood out the most were mind and vision.

Most kids my age and adults don’t realize how powerful the mind can be towards good health.  The mind can influence emotions and behaviors that can maintain perspective on and off the golf course. Vision can become a powerful way to become your best self. When you learn from your past and value your present, you can ultimately create a vision for your future.

The First Tee Nine Healthy Habits is comprehensive and is broken down into three categories:
Physical: energy, play and safety
Emotional: vision, mind and family|
Social: friends, school and community

This simplified format can help every individual gauge their healthy performance throughout the day. Now, some may believe that some of these concepts are basic, but as a participant we are encouraged to exercise these concepts into our daily routine, ultimately creating fundamental habits that can only guide us to success in anything we do.

When I first entered into high school, my schedule became increasingly hectic and it was easy to fall into bad habits, such as not eating properly or getting enough sleep. Since I had already formed the nine healthy habits into my daily routine, I stayed focused and continued healthy habits set in place and I have been able to lead almost two successful high school years with a few more on the way.

I have been a participant with The First Tee of Central Florida for about six years and I have only seen my skills improve, my level of confidence escalate and my goals increase. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle through The First Tee Nine Healthy Habits helps you become a better golfer and an overall great person!
